Protease additive does not eliminate anti-nutritive factors sufficiently

Despite numerous efforts on the part of research and practice to find alternative sources of protein, soybeans and their processing products still represent a key protein source in broiler feed. Relatively high protein contents (with a favourable amino acid pattern apart from methionine and cysteine) speak out in favour of this.

Choice of phosphorus source allows to optimize rumen productivity

Phosphorus (P) is an essential element for animals as it takes part in structural functions and in metabolism. In ruminant, P is also used by ruminal bacteria which needs for the fermentation more than the double of the required P for maintenance (Meschy, 2010). Several reports mention that about 20 to 30% of dairy cows are suffering from subacute acidosis in Germany, England or Albania (EU, 2014; Shabani and Ceroni, 2013; Kleen et al. 2013).

How great is the danger?

Livestock animals are constantly challenged with endotoxins. Especially, during stress and an impaired gut barrier, increased amounts of endotoxins can challenge the animals and have detrimental effects on animal health. The induced immune response by endotoxins costs energy resulting in decreased performance. In worst case, endotoxins can lead to an overreaction with death as consequence.

During this period Damolin was able to expand and consolidate its market position. Then the French Imerys Group found a large number of synergy options and snapped up the specialist.

In animal production the need to reduce the use of antibiotics is undisputed. In Germany, alongside improvements in management, vaccination of sows and piglets is one of the most-used measures to secure animal health and minimise the use of antibiotics. In animal husbandry regions, the costs of vaccinating all sows and piglets are € 6 to € 10 per piglet. Since the ban on the use of antibiotics in feed, a large number of feed additives to develop intestinal health have been developed that can partially support intestinal health – but are not to be rated as problem solvers.

A compound feed as alternative to castration

The meat of non-castrated pigs can have a very unpleasant odor, known as “boar taint”. Surgical castration of piglets, without anesthesia, has been used for centuries to avoid boar taint. This early intervention also allows reducing sexual behavior and aggression of the animals after the onset of sexual maturation. However, the acceptance of piglet castration is declining and the European Pig Value Chain recently stipulated that this practice should be abandoned by the 1st of January 2018.

Increased demands made of producers

It all started with the Weende feed analysis. This system, which still represents the basis of feed examinations, was developed in the year 1860 or 1863 (the chroniclers don’t know exactly) by Wilhelm Henneberg and Friedrich Stohmann at the Agricultural Experimental Station in Weende, a suburb of Göttingen. Wilhelm Henneberg became professor at the university there. He introduced physiological ways of thinking into "animal chemistry" and hence into today’s animal nutrition.

The AWT wants to boost its profile

For two years now, the German Association for Active Ingredients in Animal Nutrition (AWT), which handed its business over to the EU Association of Specialty Feed Ingredients and their Mixtures (FEFANA) in Brussels in 2010, has again been the interface between additives producers in Germany and the national and European authorities. The Association’s management has set itself the task of increasing the number of members and boosting its visibility in the public eye. FeedMagazine talked to the Chairperson Sophie von Alvensleben, and General Manager Dr. Iris Pelletier about the future path.

Feeding meets many public approaches

Traditionally, the essence of animal feed formulation and production is boosting animal growth, improving the feed conversion ratio and making safe and competitive feed available to farmers. Animal nutrition science has in the meantime undergone a redefinition, now displaying a wide array of functions that can deliver solutions to the sustainable development of the livestock sector, including aquaculture. As the new FEFAC President Nick Major explains in its 2030 Vision on Animal Nutrition, cross-sector participation and political recognition are needed to reach the next level and facilitate the uptake at farm level of innovative feed solutions enabling them to meet societal demands.

Being beastly to feed advertisers

To make it clear from the start – Babbitt Alfons is neither a vegetarian nor a vegan, but instead he follows an animal diet, in other words meat and fish. A rib eye steak medium, a roast turkey at Christmas and sashimi at any time of the year are among his favourite dishes. Alfons declares this expressly so that nobody can say he is prejudiced when he monkeys around with advertisements concerning feed for animals, which in turn serve to feed humans.

In 1954, with a reference to the predecessor organ "Die Futtermittelindustrie", which was discontinued in the final years of the war, Edmund Pries, Heinrich Asch, Fachverband der Futtermittelindustrie (the Association of the Feed Industry"), and the publicist Alfred Strothe founded "Kraftfutter" as a monthly trade journal to support the feed industry. In his greeting in the first issue of "Kraftfutter", the first Minister of Agriculture of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Wilhelm Niklas, expressed his appreciation of the outstanding role played by the feed industry in the agricultural sector with impacts on the food industry (see facsimile). This is a connection that has become increasingly important over the past decades.
