With the Lely Exos robotic vehicle, Lely Deutschland GmbH, which also made it onto the shortlist for the DLG Agri Concept Winner award, is presenting a concept for the fully autonomous harvesting and feeding of fresh grass.

Green fodder harvesting is one of the most important steps in dairy farming. High-quality basic forage, usually produced on the farmer's own land, essentially determines the value of the feed rations. It represents the basis of economical milk production and is essential for animal health.

DLG Agrifuture Concept Winner 2022

This year, for the first time, the DLG is awarding a Future Prize for Agricultural Technology and is offering the "Agrifuture Concept Winner 2022". This future prize is intended to honor concepts for pioneering agricultural technology work and visions for the future, concepts for animal husbandry with relevance and potential for improving good professional practice. The aim of the award is to present not only products that are already available on the market, but also pioneering ideas and impetus for the future of global livestock farming. What is important here is, on the one hand, the technical possibilities in the coming years and, on the other, the realistic chances of implementing the concepts.

Six concepts made it onto the shortlist. These six candidates will be presented to them successively by Feedmagazine/Kraftfutter. The winners of the competition will be determined by experts from DLG technical committees, the scientific community and international representatives. The awards ceremony will take place on November 17, 2022 at the trade show in Hanover.

With Lely Exos, Lely Deutschland GmbH introduces a concept for fully autonomous harvesting and feeding of fresh grass. Green feeding over the growing season has several advantages. For example, the energy loss due to the ensiling process is eliminated, as is that part of the harvesting costs that arises from the need to achieve a high level of efficiency in mowing, tedding, swathing and chopping, even in weather-related narrow time windows, for successful ensiling. The fully electric Lely Exos autonomously provides the green fodder daily ration for the entire herd. The robot detects obstacles and navigates seamlessly indoors and outdoors. There is also the option to apply fertilizer while harvesting is still in progress. This, and the fact that mowing takes place at the right time, promotes rapid regrowth of the grassland and the relatively low machine weight protects the soil.

In this way, the farm can optimally benefit from the use of the entire growing season, produce more milk from self-produced forage and thus reduce labor, machinery and the purchase of feed.
