As expected, the German compound feed industry was unable to increase its sales volume again in the past fiscal year. In fact there was even a slight decline in production quantities. This is due to the difficult framework conditions under which animal farmers have to earn their income in this country. The quantity developments in the feed sectors reflect the developments in animal husbandry. The fact that so far altogether only a slight decline in demand for compound feed has been felt shows that animal farmers have learned to appreciate their most important farm input – high quality compound feed – and that despite the difficult earning situations they only change over to supposedly cheaper farm-produced feed in exceptional cases. In connection with feeding results, the relation of feed costs to production yield has taken over from consideration of feed costs, which can be assessed as a major success of the quality efforts in the feed industry.

» Shortage of skilled staff in agri-business?
Academic specialisation – An opportunity or a risk?

The Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft (Cologne Institute for Economic Research) recently warned once again that there will soon be a shortage of up to 390000 engineers in Germany. As expected, trade unions view this quite differently and point to the skilled staff potential available on the domestic market that simply needs to be harvested by taking the right policy decisions.

» Lignin as binding agent in feed production
Utility for efficiancy improvement and energy saving during pelletising

Amid the discussions on sustainability and conservation of resources, lignin has now assumed a key position in research and development. Together with cellulose, lignin represents the most abundant share of organic substance on earth. The chemical-technical properties of special lignin products can make an expedient contribution to effective use of resources in feed production and can also help to increase productivity.

» Minimum contents of crude protein are not necessary for fattening pigs
Ideal protein reduces N-excretion

The times are gone when post-extraction soybean meal was relatively cheap. Even if the supply situation with soybean meal has improved in comparison to the last few years, the average price difference to grains (wheat / maize) is still >170 €/t. This is due to China’s continually growing import demand for soybean and increasing competition for the acreage of maize and soya in the USA.

» Synbiotics to coordinate the microflora in the gut
Probiotics and prebiotics protect the gut against harmful colonisation

The microbiota in the gut plays a key role in poultry health. In some cases an imbalance within this positive microbiota can have negative effects on the animal health. That is why feeding of probiotics is recommended to ensure the reproduction of beneficial microbiota.
